Inclusive Education

Empowering all students to achieve success in learning and reach their potential is our focus at St Mary’s, Warwick. Inclusive education means all students, regardless of cultural, socio-economic, religious background, or personal abilities, are provided the opportunities and support to access the Australian Curriculum.

Our qualified teachers are committed to knowing our students and meeting their varying needs, through flexible and personalised learning programs. Planning for Personalised Learning processes ensure students are supported by reasonable adjustments and teaching strategies tailored to meet their individual needs.

We are committed to meeting the unique talents and abilities of all students including high-potential and gifted students.

Learning Support
The Learning Support Teacher (LST) leads the Inclusive Education Team at St Mary’s School. The Learning Support Teacher supports teachers, staff, students, and parents through collaborative and consultative practices.  The LST works with teachers to monitor and assess students and develop programs and interventions to enable all students to reach their full potential. These programs and interventions are tailored for children experiencing learning difficulties including those in reading, writing and maths.

Our staff are supported by Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office’s School Inclusion Coaches, Education Officers, Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists who provide training, support and guidance to teachers and support officers working with students with disabilities or learning difficulties.

Guidance Counsellor
Our School Guidance Counsellor is an integral part of our St Mary’s family, ensuring the mental health and wellbeing of all students are nurtured. Guided by the ethos and values of the Diocese of Toowoomba Catholic Schools (TCS), as well as state and federal standards, our Counsellor:

  • Supports Learning and Wellbeing: Through individual and group sessions, students find a safe space to discuss challenges and celebrate successes.
  • Collaborates with the Community: Whether it is school staff, parents, or external agencies, our Counsellor works hand-in-hand to ensure every student is supported.
  • Leads Proactive Programs: From promoting social-emotional learning to leading school-wide wellbeing initiatives, students are taught essential life skills.
  • Provides Expert Guidance: Our Counsellor assists in crucial areas like psychological assessments, educational adjustments for students with special needs, and critical incident support.

Ensuring every student thrives emotionally and academically is at the heart of our School Guidance Counsellor's role. With their wide range of responsibilities, we can confidently say our students are in capable hands.

First Nations Officer
Our First Nations Officer enriches our school community with vital perspectives and support. This role serves multiple functions aimed at enhancing understanding and respect for First Nations cultures:

  • Curriculum Enhancement: Our First Nations Officer works with teachers to weave First Nations perspectives throughout the curriculum. This approach doesn't just add variety—it enriches your child's view of the world and fosters a more complete understanding of Australia's cultural tapestry.
  • Community Outreach: Beyond the classroom, our First Nations Officer also goes the extra mile to assist Indigenous students and their families. Whether it's coordinating essential healthcare services or offering specialised educational support, this role is about making sure every student has the tools to succeed.
  • Cultural Education: Education is about more than words and numbers; it's also about understanding each other. Our FNO is a guide for the whole school community, helping us all deepen our appreciation for Indigenous cultures. Through conversations, activities, and everyday interactions, our FNO fosters a climate of mutual respect and understanding that benefits everyone.

Through these varied contributions, our First Nations Officer ensures that respect for First Nations heritage and perspectives are integral parts of St Mary's educational experience.
